Description
This project grew from course work at the University of Maine, Augusta, USA, done in 2010. It focuses on using principles of environmental science to help the indigenous village of La Libertad, Colombia, live a sustainable, high-quality, lifestyle.
The people of the village need many things. The most important of these include: access to clean drinking water, proper human waste disposal, an adequate food supply, educational opportunities, and gainful employment. I am looking for anyone who may be interested in joining the project in any way. Even if you can't visit the Amazon now, there are always ways that one can support the village from home!
The project is managed and funded totally by volunteers.

Qualifications
* Outdoor Skills
This is a village with poor sanitation and infrastructure that is in the Amazon jungle, about 25 meters from the river. The weather is very hot and humid, there are many bugs and other parasites. There are piranha fish in the river and poisonous snakes in the deep jungle just outside of the village. The first qualification is to have a good deal of experience with camping and backpacking. If you are not comfortable going on at least a week long backpacking trip, you WILL NOT be comfortable here.
* Language
The villagers speak a very basic form of Spanish. Spanish speakers will have a much easier time communicating. If the volunteer is interested in teaching English, the language issues will be even less of a barrier.
* Money
The villagers have no money. They cannot afford to provide food for volunteers. They do not have enough to feed themselves well, so this truly is a volunteer opportunity. A volunteer can eat well (but a lot of fish!) on 3-4 dollars a day.
* Skills to share
What you could do for a volunteer opportunity may be very personalized. You can help build the water sanitation systems, test water and soil properties, survey the flora and fauna, develop an eco-tourism program, teach English, teach almost an other subjects to a high school level, help publicize the project, fund raise, or anything else we can think of!
* Time
The volunteer time can be as little as one week for a specialized project with approval or months long, depending on what you are doing. Eco-tourists are welcomed for shorter stays of two days.

Cost Include Description:
The cost is only for food while in the village. What the cost is really depends on what you will be doing. If you want to go on a jungle adventure/tour, the cost will be negotiated with the guide.
A covered tent platform will be provided. Travel expenses, insurance, and other personal items are the responsibility of the participant. If your project includes of material you are responsible for providing these materials. Some things, like basic teaching supplies, should be available.
