Description

Running for over 10 years, this project involves working on a variety of sustainable development projects, while gaining first-hand experience of the resource needs of impoverished communities and how these impact on conservation efforts. Based around Fort Dauphin in southeast Madagascar, you will be living and working in some of the most beautiful parts of the island and camping within rural, isolated communities.

Pioneer Madagascar is an initiative of Azafady, a charity working on humanitarian, development and environmental projects in Madagascar. During placements, volunteers will learn to speak basic Malagasy and gather skills relevant to working in the fields of development, conservation and sustainable livelihoods. The ten-week schemes involve living and traveling in some of the most beautiful and untraveled parts of Madagascar, working hands-on with village communities, Malagasy experts and our international team of group leaders. This programme focuses sensitively on local needs, human and otherwise, with a diversity of project work ranging from building schools, latrines and digging wells to educating school children about health and sanitation. Azafady has received multiple awards, including 'Best Volunteering Organisation' in 2007 by Responsible Tourism and the prestigious Sting and Trudie Styler Award for its work in conservation and human rights.
