Description
Discover Sri Lanka, a glittering jewel of an island nestled in the aquamarine waters of the Indian Ocean. Fringing the coasts are an array of gently arcing golden-sand beaches, and vibrant colourful communities making Sri Lanka a country of exquisite cultures, landscapes and cuisines with a fascinating history that reflects this.
What Will I Be Doing?
* Introduction Week
Your first week is designed to give you an opportunity to explore the history and culture of Sri Lanka, and of course Kandy, with visits to local sites of special interest such as nearby markets, sample the local cuisine, familiarise yourself with Sri Lankan customs and meet the local people, as well as hopefully learning some key phrases to help you get by. Following this wonderful opportunity to fully immerse yourself in your new surroundings, your briefings for the volunteer work will begin along with language classes and cooking lessons throughout the week.
* Cultural Week
The second week of your placement will give you the opportunity to explore Sri Lankan culture in more depth, including learning about Buddhism, philosophy and meditation techniques with local monks in a quiet and spiritual environment. You will spend your days visiting temples and markets and very quickly find yourself in touch with the local community way of life, something that will stay with you forever.
* Adventure or Volunteer Week
For your third week you will be given the option of taking part in either a community project or embarking on a trekking adventure. Volunteering options could include orphanage work, helping out at a women's shelter, elderly care home or even a community building project. Alternatively if you would prefer to explore the surrounding countryside by opting for the adventure trek, you will be taken into the mountains of Nuwara Eliya where you will visit the reserve forests of the Hill Country in the Central Province of Sri Lanka and discover the incredible variety of flora and fauna in this unique part of the world.
* Beach Week
What better way to reflect on what you have seen and done over the previous weeks than spend your days relaxing on the beach? The only thing required of you is that you relax and enjoy yourself; if you have the energy you can rent a bike and explore your surroundings, if not simply read a book and laze your days away, bathing in the unique atmosphere of Sri Lanka. You'll find that you leave this amazing country walking a little slower than when you arrived, and all your worries will be far away!
