Description

This program offers two courses: Osteoarchaeology and Introduction to Forensic Anthropology. Osteoarchaeology examines Ancient Maya skeletal remains from archaeological contexts around Belize. This Osteoarchaeological (or bioarchaeological) approach helps us reconstruct the cultural and biological pasts of the Ancient Maya. The course will focus on the burial practices of the Ancient Maya through incorporation of archaeological sites visits within Belize. The theories and methods behind bioarchaeological analysis will be discussed and practiced throughout the course, using the Ancient Maya as examples. Topics such as Ancient Maya health, disease, subsistence patterns, and biological relatedness will be discussed.

The Introduction to Forensic Anthropology course examines human skeletal remains, the processes of decomposition, and the proper retrieval of human skeletal remains from a crime scene. The theories and methods behind forensic anthropology will be discussed and practiced throughout the course. Case studies of crime scenes in the US, as well as clandestine graves from around the world, will be drawn upon. This course is designed ONLY to introduce students to the profession of forensic anthropology; it will NOT make you a forensic anthropologist. In addition, this course will NOT deal with other aspects of forensics such as trace evidence, DNA analysis, blood spatter or ballistic analysis, or autopsies. The course will look at forensic anthropology within the context of a developing nation. We will look at the rates of decay within a tropical county and compare those with rates in temperate regions. We will meet with police officials, the coroner and visit the National Forensic Service (tentative on confirmation) to understand the challenges they have with identifying human remains, and locating and successfully prosecuting murder suspects.
