Description

The sports federation of Pichincha was established in 1924, as the major sports league of the surrounding area. Their mission is to contribute in the development of different kind of sports in Pichincha where Ecuador's Capital Quito is located. Aiming to develop and to form athletes from different social classes in the province, year by year they reach this goal by opening their doors and offering scholarships to lower-class kids so they can be part of the Federation.

The Inline hockey division was created about 18 years ago. They started their practice at the Sports Federation Headquarters. Nowadays, they have their own outside rink at the north end of the city. It has their own viewing stands so the public can watch or assist with the local tournaments that take place every 2 or 3 months. The players range from ages: 10 to 25 years old. The majority are kids from medium to high-income families.

Highlights

- Enjoy living in Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. This beautiful city will take you back through 500 years of history, cultural sites and places you will never forget. Quito has colonial churches, structures and historical sites hundreds of years old, such as La Iglesia de San Francisco, La Plaza de la Independencia, the mighty Basilica and more.

- You can't miss the Teleferico. This is a sky tram that takes passengers up the flanks of the Pichincha Volcano to the top of Cruz Loma. The view from here is something spectacular.

- Adjacent to the Old City in Quito, El Panecillo is a large hill on top of which a large statute of the Virgin of Quito sits and is visible from miles around. From the top there are marvelous views of the whole city and the volcanoes.

- Just outside of Quito is where measurements were first made that proved the shape of the Earth is in fact an oblate spheroid. Commemorating this, there is a large monument that straddles the equator called Mitad del Mundo "The Middle of the World". You can't miss stepping on both the northern and southern hemispheres simultaneously.

- Take a weekend tour and hike Cotopaxi Volcano. The Cotopaxi National Park is located in the "Avenue of the Volcanoes" a breathtaking place. Hike to the glaciers and enjoy the view!

Hockey is one of the most athletic sports in the world, as well as one that requires the most physical protection to the players. In Ecuador, Hockey has been gaining more fans and players over the last 12 years. And nowadays, it has spread around the main schools in the country, which already have their own fields and hockey teams. Every day there are more kids and teenagers from middle and high schools interested in playing the game.

Even though Ice Hockey has developed quite fast in the last few years, it is Inline hockey that has attracted more Ecuadorian players. The Sports Federation of Pichincha has an Inline hockey division that trains everyday, and has a diversity of players and local tournaments. The youngest players are 10 years old. But with the rapid growth of the sport, they keep getting younger and younger teams every year.

Volunteering at Inline hockey will give you the opportunity of a lifetime of being part of this sport's development in Ecuador and in South America. While sharing your hockey techniques and skills with local kids and teenagers, you can also enjoy life in Ecuador's capital, Quito. It is in the Andes highlands with beautiful and picturesque landscapes, and close enough that you can go to the coast or to the amazon rainforest on the weekend.
