Description
Teach Conversational English in this hot tropical paradise to deserving children and adults who REALLY need your help! A stimulating yet laid-back travel experience suitable for anyone who is motivated to help others whilst having an original and authentic time aboard. No previous experience needed.
Project Overview:
We have a selection of institutions that you can teach at, catering for children ranging in age from very young to teenagers. You can also teach adults looking to improve their English, and in turn, their career prospects. With many worthwhile Travellers projects on-going in Rio, you choose the age group you want to work with. You may want to concentrate your time in just one institute or you may be keen to spread your help between a selection of institutes, gaining a varied experience.
Whilst exposure to English is vital to the kids of these projects, it is absolutely possible to use different subjects to achieve this goal, from music to drama to art to sport to IT! If you wanted to focus on teaching one of these subjects, we have such projects available.
Travellers offers teacher training courses (1 day intensive, or weekend recognized TEFL qualifications in London and Brighton- more details on the website).
The colourful city of Rio, jammed between miles of coastline and mountains, is regarded as one of the worlds greatest and most beautiful cities in the world. It pulses with life and deserves its reputation as Cidade Maravilhosa (Wonderful City). The inhabitants of Rio, known locally as Cariocas, pursue pleasure like no other people, fully utilizing their impressive beaches with beautiful people, samba, ice cold beers and the local firewater, cachaca!
Why not combine your volunteering in Rio with a cultural experience whilst you're there? Travellers can arrange the following for your free time, at your request:
--> Learn, practice and play the beautiful fight/dance/art of Capoeira
--> Music courses (a variety of local percussion/styles for you to choose from)
--> Study Portuguese - immerse yourself in the language and you will be amazed at the effects it brings!
--> Photography courses
--> Care and creche work
--> Dance and sports coaching
More information on all of these is available on Travellers website

Highlights
Accommodation And Food In Rio De Janeiro:
Accommodation is situated in the Flamingo region of Rio - just a hop, skip and a jump away from famous Copacabana beach! This is a great place to be as you will be only 3 minutes away from the metro station, opposite the Catete Palace and you will be able to visit Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue with great ease.
Rooms are available as dorms, singles and doubles. If you have a preference, please be sure to let us know at the time of booking and we can make the necessary arrangements for you. All rooms have their own bathroom and individual cupboard with a key for security.
Past volunteers have regarded eating out as one of the highlights of living in South America, and an essential part of Brazilian culture! Because of this, the price of your placement includes your breakfast but for dinner, you'll get the chance to venture out and sample some of the fabulous food which Rio is famous for.
For breakfast in the hotel you can expect a feast of natural fruits and juices (try the acai - a delicious berry to sprinkle on your granola cereal), coffee, milk, bread, cheese, ham, butter, jams and sweet cakes (popular in Brazil for breakfast) amongst other things - so you certainly wont be leaving on an empty stomach! You will be allowed to use the kitchen facilities whenever it is not being used by the hotel staff.
The Brazilian passion for food is reflected in the numbers of people you will see spending long, balmy evenings dining in restaurants and al fresco in the city's buzzing streets, feasting on fare from the traditional Feijoada (black beans and pork stew) or Mariscada (seafood stew) to modern global cuisine rivalling that of any other international city! If youre partial to tipple, you might like to indulge in a caipiranha, Brazils traditional carnival drink made with lime and cachaça, best enjoyed in the sunshine with a churrasco, which is a Brazilian barbeque of rice, meats and - of course - salsa!
The cost of eating out in Rio can vary from a just a couple of pounds up to a couple of hundred pounds! This is one city where you certainly wont have any trouble eating well on a tight budget - there are some very inexpensive options available and you'll dine out handsomely on about 4 GBP (6 USD); although you could be lucky and get away with spending even less and still be eating well. The trick is to keep your eyes peeled for the bargain eateries offering specials such as buffet lunches. Also don't forget the supermarkets are a good option and are comparable in standard to those found back home.
Our users say...
"The schools main objective is to keep children in off the streets, so it provides activities throughout the day and in the evenings in the hope that children will want to stay all day, every day..... and they do! On top of this, children receive a nutritious meal at lunchtime, which is usually their only meal of the entire day. The enthusiasm from the principal and staff has the most incredible effect on the children - despite their circumstances and the daily hardships that they face, they simply love school!! You will be welcomed with open arms to teach whatever you can, including drama, sports, music, art, IT. However, all of the teachers are very excited about being able to offer students the possibility to learn English. The principal is incredibly genuine and passionate about the school and is viewed as a mother figure by many of the children. When I left, she couldn't thank me enough for being part of setting up this programme, which give children at the school the opportunity to be exposed to native English speakers. This project is going to be a huge success - the school is incredible and heartbreaking at the same time, anyone volunteering here will fall in love with its magical atmosphere!"
